Mini-Editorial: Local Caucuses are Ground Level Democracy
By Thomas Wills – Herald Editor/Co-Publisher
If you have never been to your political party’s precinct caucus, 2016 is a good time to start. Consider: this presidential election cycle is one of the most ideologically divided in recent memory. This election may also literally determine the future of humankind in regards to issue of human-caused climate change, a scientific fact that should transcend political party, but during this election will be just another point of polarization.
Republican presidential candidates range from the mainstream conservatives John Kasich and Jeb Bush to neo-fascists/xenophobes Donald Trump and Ted Cruz to libertarian, Rand Paul.
Democrats offer mainstream moderate turned neo-liberal, Hillary Clinton, old-style independent populist/democratic socialist, Bernie Sanders and more traditional liberal, Martin O’Malley.
So whether you are Republican or Democrat you have very sharp, clear choices to make and more reasons than ever to attend your local precinct caucus and hash it out with your neighbors. If you are an affiliated party member and fail to do this you will have left the choices up to a very small minority.
Of course if you are still unaffiliated (as of January 4) or a member of a minor third party you can only watch helplessly from the sidelines as your future choices are chosen for you.
In 2016 we as a nation stand at a crossroads, between science and willful ignorance, between fear and moral fortitude, between confirmation bias and critical thinking, between demagoguery and thoughtful debate, and even between the dark and light in our nation’s character. And the first test of all of this will be at your political party’s neighborhood caucus, standing face to face with your neighbors and speaking your mind. Trying to stand up for what is right the best you can. Best of luck. Pray for America.
