SENATE DEMOCRATS STATEMENT ON HISTORIC SAGE GROUSE ANNOUNCEMENT

Denver, CO — Today, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that the Greater sage grouse does not need endangered species protection, thanks to unprecedented wildlife conservation efforts made here in Colorado and across 10 other western states. Colorado Senate Democrats released the following statements in response to this exciting news:Senator Kerry Donovan (D-5)
“This incredibly important decision made by the U.S. Department of the Interior speaks volumes about the tremendous work being done by locals in Colorado to save the Greater sage grouse. While this is by no means the end of our efforts to protect our beautiful lands and wildlife, this is a milestone that shows we are making great progress.  As a resident of the High Country — where protecting our public lands and native wildlife is a top priority for everyone — I am very pleased by this decision.”

Senator Lucia Guzman (D-34)
“Thanks to the ambitious, bipartisan planning initiatives here in Colorado and across the country, efforts to save the iconic Greater sage grouse and its sagebrush home have made tremendous progress as shown by Secretary Jewell’s announcement today. The ongoing protection of our lands and our native wildlife is incredibly important to the future of our state, and I am confident that by continuing to work together, we will ensure the Greater sage grouse and our sagebrush landscapes will survive and thrive for generations to come.”
