KVNF’s Palmisano Recieves Fellowship Honor

Laura Palmisano, senior reporter for KVNF Community Radio in Paonia, Colorado, recently

received a fellowship from the Institute for Justice & Journalism. As part of the award,

Palmisano attended a multi­day training conference in Atlanta, about reporting on immigration

issues in Atlanta. The Institute for Justice & Journalism is a non­profit organization with a

mission to share knowledge and create more informed media coverage of relevant social and

economic justice issues. Palmisano was one of only 15 national recipients from across the U.S.

chosen for the fellowship through a competitive application process, partly based on her

proposal for a story series.

Palmisano’s story project for the fellowship highlights a group of refugees from Myanmar,

formerly known as Burma, who fled their homeland because of violence and persecution. She

became interested in in this community last fall after meeting them at a farm in Delta County.

The first story in the series on the Karen refugee population in Delta, Colorado, aired on June

8th on the KVNF regional newscast, which airs weekdays at 8 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. The story and

the rest of the series will be available on kvnf.org.

Palmisano is part of the expanded regional news department at KVNF that includes a new

reporter position. Jake Ryan will be covering climate change and sustainability issues with the

iSeeChange project.
