It seems like just yesterday when the Grand Mesa Nordic Council (GMNC) was formed and the first trails were groomed. This 25th anniversary season celebrates the vision of GMNC founders – Tom Ela, Winslow Robertson, Chuck Bodie and Will Worthwine. These four avid Nordic skiers worked together at Powderhorn Nordic before it went out of business. The group was not ready to see Nordic skiing on the Grand Mesa come to an end and decided to form GMNC. They received a Grand Junction Lion’s Club grant to purchase the initial grooming equipment, an Alpine Town Track snowmobile, and the first groomed tracks were made! Tom and Winslow, “the heart and soul of the GMNC” have been dedicated board members since the beginning. Many other committed individuals over the years have helped keep our organization going. “This year, we celebrate continuing GMNC’s tradition of providing 54 Kilometers of Nordic skiing without trail use fees. We couldn’t have done it without the fantastic work of our operations and grooming crew, the financial support of members and grants, plus the careful financial oversight of current and past board members,” said David Knutson, GMNC board president.
The “WinterStart” race is one of five races in the Grand Mesa Nordic Race Series. The Grand Mesa Nordic Council also offers adult lessons and special kids programs throughout the season. Visit gmnc.org for more information.
